Paint and Conversion Plan for Cthulhu Genestealers
So what we got here for you today is a fun paint and conversion plan for the Genestealers of Hive Fleet Cthulhu which we are utilizing for our Tiamat escalation league in Denver. What started as a joke turned challenge has been finished and we wanted to share this with the fans of our site. Whilst prepping for our campaign, CJ (who's largest army he plays is his personally created Hive Fleet Gerasene, aka the Purple People Eaters) donated extra bits he had laying around to be featured as our genestealer infestations. While trying to come up with a Tyranid paint scheme he jokingly suggested creating Hive Fleet Cthulhu knowing my admiration of H.P. Lovecraft lore. While it was too late to change the marketing materials and the fleet just wouldn't fit with the fluff of the campaign, we came to love the idea and it will end up being our first official studio army here at Kreator. Many people asked how they were created at our first scenario for our campaign that we are running at Bonnie Brea Hobbies and Atomic Games, so in response we are posting how to create Hive Fleet Cthulhu in general here for all of you!
The Build
Ok so the conversion that we went for here was pretty simple. We used green stuff to fill the open mouthed genestealers and we cut off as many of the implant tongues as felt necessary (leaving them on makes for a fun finished product too). We mixed up some green stuff and rolled it out to about roughly 1-1.5 mm thick tubes. Then we cut the tubes rolled down to 1/3"-1/2" sections. With those sections we attached the cut pieces of green stuff to the mouths of the genestealers and filled it all in to make the tentacles complete.
The Paint
We started off by using what we like to call the poor mans air brush or a can of Rust-Oleum painters touch can. The color is Eden and the green should be near the hue of Nurgling or Ogryn green. The end result once you have sprayed it should look like this:
After that we applied an over brush of Moot Green to the model to finish off the highlight to the skin on the model. The final result should look like this:
From there we took Zandri Dust and painted the carapace and claws. We then painted the accents, veins, and eyes with Xereus purple. This completes all of the basecoats on the model.
For the highlights on the carapace we layered on Tallarn Sand, followed by a secondary highlight of Ushabti Bone.
Then wash all of it with agrax earthshade.
Once that dries use Daemonette Hide and highlight the Xereus Purple. Finally you can paint the base. You can use Mephiston Red then dry brush with Evil Suns Scarlet like we did or go with your own!
Well we hope you enjoy this and thought it was helpful. Please feel free to add your submissions and look again to see how Hive Fleet Cthulhu grows!
